Well built highly portable. (2009-04-11)
This grill is really nothing more than the charcoal pan from the more expensive Brinkman "Gourmet" smoker. The gourmet smoker can grill or smoke, and I've used this numerous times to grill. We find it to be just large enough to grill for our family of 4. The coal pan is pretty heavy gauge metal. The outer pan with the feet is thinner, but doesn't get too hot. You may want to consider buying the Gourmet instead. If you buy it at a home center, for about 1/3 more in price, you get a whole smoker. Either way, it's rugged, and small enough to take anywhere.

It does exactly what it is supposed to do (2007-10-22)
I bought the Brinkmann electric smoker at Lowe's for just over fifty dollars, and have been experimenting with lots of different kinds of meats. I wanted to do smoked ribs, but I knew the two racks would not hold very much, so I bought two sets of rib racks from CSP Outdoors for about ten dollars each. They worked very well. One big package of pork ribs from Sam's Club, about 13 pounds, was about the most they can hold, and still allow air space between the sections. Best ribs I have had in a long time! I think I can use this for other kinds of meat, too, to hold a lot more in the smoker than I can otherwise. Beware of the Weber rib racks, they are too big to fit in the Brinkmann smoker, which is smaller than the Weber smoker. It really does help to spray everything with cooking spray oil before you start, otherwise it's a big job to get everything clean afterwards.

Brinkmann 810-5290-C (2009-09-03)
My smoker was received as a wedding gift in 1992. We have been very pleased with this smoker over the years. It has turned out succulent smoked turkey, chicken, fish, and pork roasts. Sadly, this morning, as I proceeded to smoke a brined turkey, the plug kept tripping the breaker. I think that may be salt related as we've been near the ocean the last two years. I cannot complain. We got our use out of it and I would replace it with the same one if Brinkmann cannot sell me a replacement heating element first, as the rest of the smoker is still in good condition. I actually prefer smoking over grilling because my food does not ignite.

Can NOT be beat in this price range. (2009-02-09)
This little smoker is a gem. It's easy to assemble, and easy to use. This barbecue is perfect if (like me,) you just want great eating with only modest fuss. It's more work than grilling meat, but much less work than with a more expensive smoker. Brinkman doesn't give you much control over the heat. And because of that, there isn't much to set wrong and ruin your dinner. The guys for whom barbecuing is a lifestyle, scoff over this unit. That's fine, because they love to tweak every minute detail in the quest to get the perfect ribs. If you're like that, you'll outgrow this unit quick. As for me, I set it up, check it once in awhile and happily eat great food a few hours later. The first time I used it, I lit too much charcoal, and I couldn't get the tempurature down to where I thought it should be (mid to low of "ideal range." It was getting late, so I swallowed hard and threw a rack of St. Louis ribs on it. They were supposed to smoke for 4-5 hours. But because it was so hot, they were done in about 3. You know what? They were fantastic. The next time I over compensated and used too little charcoal while smoking about 20 Sausages The tempurature fell, and wouldn't come up. So I just added charcoal, and waited a bit longer. We still had a great dinner that night. My point? Brinkman designed it so that it is forgiving, and dummy friendly.

The ad above mentions that it can be converted to a charcoal grill. Yes it can, easily. The unit has 3 main parts. The charcoal pan, the tube/cylinder and the lid. You can take just the pan and lid, and use it as a table top/portable charcoal grill. It's a little larger than a Smokey Joe grill this way. Or, you can also sit the tube/cylinder straight on the ground, and set the charcoal pan on top of it. That way you don't need a table, or to be on your knees. We are a family of 4, and find it to be just large enough for the four of us. If you're throwing a party, you're going to want to smoke something anyway, and the smoker can hold a whole lot of meat.

If you do buy this unit, it will work pretty good right out of the box. But for about 10 bucks and 30 minutes, you can make a really good modification that will make your charcoal burn longer. I did it, and it works great: [...]

Great starter smoker (2005-12-13)
So far, I've done briskets, pork shoulders, chickens, turkeys and salmon, and everything has turned out grat. It's easy to use, easy to feed and keeps food moist; the water pan works as a buffer.

The review would be 5 stars except that the temperature gague says "warm" "ideal" and "hot," but neither the manual nor the company knows exactly what temperature range those words correspond to. I actually contacted them and asked, and the answers I got were imprecise.

I've found, for example, that "ideal" is great for doing a chicken in 2-3 hours, but you want it at the high end of "warm" cooler if doing brisket for 10-12. Otherwise, though, no complaints.

It's a Cover (2009-01-06)
Not the greatest looking cover...I would have preferred something that better conforms to the contours of the smoker. Unlike others I looked at, this one has accomodations for the smoke stack and the firebox, but it doesn't have a "fitted" look. It's also made of a thinner vinyl than other grill covers I've owned. There are velcro straps on each end of the cover to hold it on, but the ones on the right side are impossible to attach without getting down on the ground. Despite these shortcomings, it serves its purpose. It's nothing more than a cover and it ought to provide some protection for the smoker.

Great smoker grill cover! (2008-05-29)
Thanks for the great grill cover. I was very surprised how quickly the order was sent. Opened up the package and put it on - the fit was perfect! I checked several places on price and availablity; and many were found in stock, but Amazon was the cheapest. It is a loose enough fit that it is easy to put on, but awkward to tie the ties underneath to keep from blowing off. The cover is quite heavy - not just cheap lightweight plastic. Definately worth the money to protect your grill.

Heavy Duty Cover (2008-04-06)
A cover for your Brinkmann grill is essential. Left out in the weather, it will rust quickly. This cover is great because it is made of heavy duty vinyl and will protect your grill from the rain and snow. The only reason I'm not giving this product five stars is that I'm buying this to replace my original cover. After five years, the first one (identical to this one) has developed cracks in the vinyl letting water get through. But it does say something that I'm buying the same cover to replace it.

Nice Therometer (2010-03-29)
I installed this Thermometer on my Weber One-Touch Gold Grill. It works well and is very visible. It really helps me to keep the grill on the correct temp.

Don't grill without it! (2010-02-23)
I've got 2 Weber charcoal grills - a large one, and a smaller "Smokey Joe" grill. Neither of them have a thermometer, so I decided to buy one of these thermometers for the larger grill. It's very accurate, and it definitely pulls the temperature from the probe, not from the metal surface of the grill lid. I tested this by gripping the probe tightly in my hand, which caused the needle to move to just below 100 degrees. However, when I gripped the meter housing in the same way, it did not move at all. I am highly confident that the temperature displayed on the thermometer is the temperature of the air inside the grill.

Installation is a breeze: Drill a 3/8" hole in whatever surface you want to mount this to, put the probe through the hole, and tighten the nut and washer down with a wrench or pliers.

The face appears to be some sort of plastic, probably to help keep it from fogging up. When I used my grill in the rain, it did get a little condensation inside, but not enough to obstruct the view.

I will definitely be buying a second one of these for my smaller grill.

Update, 5/4/2010:
I ended up buying a second one of these thermometers for my other grill. It works exactly like the first one, which I am very happy about. I mentioned before that I thought the face seemed like some sort of plastic, but now i am pretty sure it is glass, although I'll never know for sure unless I break one apart. Any ways, the reason for the update in the review is that the second one I bought is slightly different than the first one, in a good way! Mechanically and structurally, they are identical, however the printing on the gauge face was different on the new one. The first gauge was the same as the photo shown here on the product page, marked as "Smoke" from 100-225, "Barbecue" from 225-375, and everything after 375 is just empty white space. After using it several times, I kept thinking "I wish it said "Grill" for the temperatures above 375. Well, on the second thermometer I received, it actually DOES say grill in the 375-550 section. It's not that big of a deal, but I just thought I would post an update of my review to reflect the differences in the 2 thermometers that I bought from the same product page.

It works and looks good on Baby Q (2009-01-07)
I have 2 Weber Q's, the 220 and Baby Q. The 220 comes with a thermometer which has been handy to be sure you have the heat you need, but the Baby Q did not have a gauge. This is a nice gauge and a very good value. I simply drilled one hole in the aluminum lid and attached it to the front. Depending on where you mount the gauge keep in mind the inside probe extends about 3 inches, so note whether there will be any interference with the grate or whatever you may be grilling. Happy with my purchase.

Good Smoke (2010-02-06)
I love this smoker. I did have experience with a genuine Cookin Cajin from the company Brinkman purchased. It was a little more heavy-duty, but as far as results go, the Brinkmann is every bit as good. Assembly proved to be slightly annoying. The screws and nuts were tiny and difficult to thread and the main cylinder was slightly out of round. Once assembled, however, the performance is excellent. I've used it a dozen times already, with very tastey results.

Smoker is great - shipping was bad (2009-07-15)
Smoker meets my needs and especially like that you can lift the smoker from the base to add more charcoal. The shipping was not good as the smoker came dented (bought one for sister and it too arrived dented). Brinkman service finally did replace both but they will not talk to you when you call - they call you back - 2+ weeks later!
